CO2 PACMAN

Building on outcomes and tools from the previous projects Interreg Med BLUE DEAL and COMPOSE Plus and the FP7 CityZen, CO2 Pacman will provide knowledge and tools to drive the implementation of integrated strategies and policies for the challenge of climate change mitigation and adaptation; with this purpose, it will engage public authorities, citizens and stakeholders in co-creation of scenarios for the transition towards climate neutral islands.


Background

The Mediterranean area is one of the most affected territories by climate change: air and water temperature increase; extreme events of droughts, heat waves and flash floods; ecosystem health and biodiversity problems, implying also risks in food and energy security. CO2 Pacman directly refers to the common territorial challenge of establishing climate-neutral economies in the Euro-Med context and worldwide by means of an integrated vision of territories’ transition to sustainable and resilient communities. Contextually, it promotes multi-purpose actions for climate change mitigation/adaptation, based on exploiting and promoting local knowledge and assets, ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth, energy security and improved quality of life, demonstrating how these challenges are deeply interconnected.


General objectives

CO2 Pacman will benefit from the different and complementary expertise of project partners and will foster transnational cooperation to create a favorable environment for knowledge increase and exchange, to empower the innovation capacity of PAs and raise awareness of citizens on the opportunities of transition to a net-zero carbon economy.


Studying Approach

The project forecasts the following main innovative practices:.

  • CO2 Pacman Rooting Labs. Three-day workshops in pilot islands (1st round) made of co-working and interactive sessions involving project partners and local stakeholders for onsite investigations, data collection, knowledge sharing and discussion on specific potential solutions.
  • CO2 Pacman Tool. The Carbon Footprint of the island will be assessed and represented in terms of virtual forestland needed to absorb the equivalent amount of CO2 emission.
  • Citizen Engagement. A set of activities, inspired by the BLUE DEAL “askyourcitizensonbe” tool, will be defined to let citizens be the main actors in the participatory process and contribute to identifying the best chances for transition to a low-carbon economy.
  • Youth Think Tank. Engagement of young students of secondary schools and universities of pilot islands and beyond called to co-create and represent their vision of a net zero carbon future.
  • Open Innovation Collaborative Action. Engagement of technical and technological companies called to send their proposals in the field of renewable energies and ecosystem-based solutions.
  • 3D virtual reality experience. 3D simulations in a virtual world, containing landscapes, location-specific objects and 3D intervention elements to help PAs, stakeholders and citizens visualize and assess potential installations and interact within a virtual environment for a highly engaging immersive experience.
  • CO2 Pacman “The Island I Would Like” Labs and transition Roadmap. Three-day workshops in pilot islands (2nd round) aimed at presentation and discussion of project results open to local stakeholders and citizens and synthesis of a climate-neutral transition Roadmap.

  • The "Summer School on Energy Planning of 100% Renewable Energy Systems" , held from September 2 to 6, 2024 at the Inter University Center, Dubrovnik, was focused on energy and climate modeling of smart energy systems along with dynamic modeling of relevant ecological, economic, sociological and technical parameters.
    24 participants from 16 different countries took part in the summer school. In addition to acquiring new knowledge, the participants used the full potential of the summer school and had a lot of fun, met new friends, colleagues or possible partners in future projects and research!
  • The updated list for citation year 2022 includes 18 members of the SDEWES International Scientific Committee in the 2% of the most influential scientists in the world today!
    SDEWES Centre proudly congratulates to Annamaria Buonomano, Francesco Calise, Raf Dewil, Neven Duić, Kemal Hanjalic, Soteris A. Kalogirou, Şiir Kılkış, Walter Leal Filho, Henrik Lund, Christos Markides, Brian Vad Mathiesen, Poul Alberg Østergaard, Antonio Piacentino, Rodney A. Stewart, Petar Sabev Varbanov, Subhas K. Sikdar, Qiuwang Wang and Xiliang Zhang for this great achievement.
    The list has been made and updated by a group of researchers from Stanford University led by professor John Ioannidis.   • Povjerenstvo Međunarodnog centra za održivi razvoj energetike, voda i okoliša (SDEWES Centre) odabralo je tri najbolja diplomska rada studenata Fakulteta strojarstva i brodogradnje za 2022./2023. Autori najboljih radova su 1. Karlo Kvaternik, 2. Marko Starčević i 3. Jan Karl Ormuž. Prvoplasirani će biti nagrađen s novčanom nagradom od 1.000,00 EUR bruto, a drugo i trećeplasirani imaju pravo na besplatnu kotizaciju za jednu od SDEWES konferencija koje će se održati 2024. godine. Pravo prijave imaju svi studenti s diplomskim radom obranjenim u akademskoj godini 2022./2023. s ocjenom izvrstan i s temom iz područja održivog razvoja energetike, voda i okoliša.   • Project 'COASTENERGY' was declared the best EU project in Croatia in the category 'Contribution to science and innovation'. In this year's selection for the "Best County EU" project in Croatia, among 37 other candidates, the winner in the "Contribution to science and innovation" category was the Istrian County project COASTENERGY - Blue energy in ports and coastal urban areas. The project also won third place according to the popular public votes. SDEWES Centre participated in the project as a project partner in charge of the WP3.
  • Povjerenstvo Međunarodnog centra za održivi razvoj energetike, voda i okoliša (SDEWES Centre) odabralo je tri najbolja diplomska rada studenata FSB-a za 2019./20. te za 2020./21. Autori najboljih radova su Dino Kovačević u ak. godini 2019./20. te Dominik Rašić u ak. godini 2020./21.   • 20 members of the SDEWES International Scientific Committee were listed among the 2% most influential scientists in the world today in the updated list for citation year 2020. The list has been made and updated by a group of researchers from Stanford University led by professor John Ioannidis. They surveyed 100,000 top scientists using Scopus database and classified them into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields.
    “We have created a publicly available database that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator”, the authors explained.

A committee consisting of Prof. Nataša Markovska, Prof. Nikola Ružinski and Prof. Aleksander Zidanšek made a decision on the three best graduate theses and the best authors are Mario Majdandžić, Luka Pavlinek and Vanja Kušen. Best thesis author, Mario Majdandžić will receive a cash prize in the amount of 5,000 HRK and the other two authors will receive a fee waiver for one of SDEWES conferences in 2018. Congratulations!

They will be rewarded with a fee waiver for a SDEWES conference of their choice, and the best thesis author will also have fully paid transport costs and accommodation during the selected conference.
