The overall objective of LOCOMOTION is to enhance existing Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) in order to provide policy makers and relevant stakeholders with a reliable and practical model system to assess the feasibility, effectiveness, costs and impacts of different sustainability policy options, and to identify the most effective transition pathways towards a low-carbon society.

Building on existing IAMs developed in the MEDEAS European project, and including knowledge from other relevant models (World6, TIMES, LEAP, GCAM, C-Roads, …), a number of substantive improvements are foreseen with respect to the state-of-the-art in energy-economy-environment modelling:

  • Expanding the geographical coverage and detail by creating a new worldwide multi-regional model with 7 global regions and integrating the 28 EU countries.
  • Improving IAMs by increasing the detail and precision of existing modules and adding new ones.
  • Integrating relevant functionalities from other models and comparing modelling results.
  • Integrating demand management policies in scenario assessment.
  • Representing and quantifying uncertainty.
  • Improving the usability of the IAMs through the development of two interface levels (professional and educational).
  • Exploiting and disseminating model result to three stakeholder groups: policy-makers and experts on strategic planning; experts on IAMs, modellers and programmers; and civil society.

The improved IAM will be the product of an interdisciplinary work in data management, policy and scenario assessment and system dynamic modelling of relevant environmental, economic, social, technological and biophysical variables.

This new IAM will be a robust, usable and reliable tool of diagnostic and scenario assessment for a sustainable transition towards a low-carbon society. LOCOMOTION will provide the different stakeholders with a more effective, user-friendly and open-source, model system for decision-support, education and social awareness.

  • The "Summer School on Energy Planning of 100% Renewable Energy Systems" , held from September 2 to 6, 2024 at the Inter University Center, Dubrovnik, was focused on energy and climate modeling of smart energy systems along with dynamic modeling of relevant ecological, economic, sociological and technical parameters.
    24 participants from 16 different countries took part in the summer school. In addition to acquiring new knowledge, the participants used the full potential of the summer school and had a lot of fun, met new friends, colleagues or possible partners in future projects and research!
  • The updated list for citation year 2022 includes 18 members of the SDEWES International Scientific Committee in the 2% of the most influential scientists in the world today!

  • Povjerenstvo Međunarodnog centra za održivi razvoj energetike, voda i okoliša (SDEWES Centre) odabralo je tri najbolja diplomska rada studenata Fakulteta strojarstva i brodogradnje za 2022./2023. Autori najboljih radova su 1. Karlo Kvaternik, 2. Marko Starčević i 3. Jan Karl Ormuž. Prvoplasirani će biti nagrađen s novčanom nagradom od 1.000,00 EUR bruto, a drugo i trećeplasirani imaju pravo na besplatnu kotizaciju za jednu od SDEWES konferencija koje će se održati 2024. godine. Pravo prijave imaju svi studenti s diplomskim radom obranjenim u akademskoj godini 2022./2023. s ocjenom izvrstan i s temom iz područja održivog razvoja energetike, voda i okoliša.   • Project 'COASTENERGY' was declared the best EU project in Croatia in the category 'Contribution to science and innovation'. In this year's selection for the "Best County EU" project in Croatia, among 37 other candidates, the winner in the "Contribution to science and innovation" category was the Istrian County project COASTENERGY - Blue energy in ports and coastal urban areas. The project also won third place according to the popular public votes. SDEWES Centre participated in the project as a project partner in charge of the WP3.
  • Povjerenstvo Međunarodnog centra za održivi razvoj energetike, voda i okoliša (SDEWES Centre) odabralo je tri najbolja diplomska rada studenata FSB-a za 2019./20. te za 2020./21. Autori najboljih radova su Dino Kovačević u ak. godini 2019./20. te Dominik Rašić u ak. godini 2020./21.   • 20 members of the SDEWES International Scientific Committee were listed among the 2% most influential scientists in the world today in the updated list for citation year 2020. The list has been made and updated by a group of researchers from Stanford University led by professor John Ioannidis. They surveyed 100,000 top scientists using Scopus database and classified them into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields.
    “We have created a publicly available database that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator”, the authors explained.

A committee consisting of Prof. Nataša Markovska, Prof. Nikola Ružinski and Prof. Aleksander Zidanšek made a decision on the three best graduate theses and the best authors are Mario Majdandžić, Luka Pavlinek and Vanja Kušen. Best thesis author, Mario Majdandžić will receive a cash prize in the amount of 5,000 HRK and the other two authors will receive a fee waiver for one of SDEWES conferences in 2018. Congratulations!
